How to Choose a Location for your Elopement

Valuable Advice on Picking the Right Spot from an Elopement Photographer

What Is An Elopement?

Before you learn how to choose a location for your elopement, let’s make sure you understand exactly what an elopement is. Over the years of helping couples elope, I’ve realized that many brides and grooms-to-be are still mystified by the term. Elopements are considered small and intimate wedding– and no, this doesn’t mean it has to just be the two of you. If you want to learn more about elopements, I bust a lot of misunderstandings about them in my blog “The Myths and Misconceptions of Elopements.” I hope it serves as some inspiration for you and your future spouse!

How Do I Choose the Right Location For Our Elopement?

When it comes to choosing your location there are three key things to keep in mind:

  • Does the location work for the time of day we want?
  • Does the location itself match the look and feel we want?
  • Is the location safe for you, your guests, and your photographer?

The Best Time of Day To Elope

“What is the best time of day to photograph our elopement?” I get asked this question a lot. I wish I could say, “Oh anytime! It doesn’t matter!” But the truth is, not all locations are suited to be photographed (or even visited) at certain times of the day. To make sure your day runs smoothly- and that you have the most amazing photos to look back on- I can make recommendations on which locations will be better for sunset or sunrise.

Your Look and Feel

Sometimes choosing the location for your elopement comes without question; it could be the location of your first date, your favorite get-away, or the most scenic spot near where you live. But if no one location sprang to mind after you said “I Do,” then you’re going to want to go to the drawing board. Below are some questions you can ask yourself when narrowing it down.

Are the Views Amazing?

Having beautiful photographs of your big (even if it’s “small”) day is something I can guarantee you’re going to want. There’s nothing like a gorgeous view to make not just your photographs stand out, but also the experience. I’ve shot elopements everyone from on the edge of a cliff overlooking Yosemite, on a private beach where the ocean feels like the officiant, and even on paddle boards. Wherever you choose, make sure your surroundings support and enhance your momentous occasion.

Is the Location Easily Accessible?

As an adventure photographer, there’s almost no location I am not willing to guide you to for your perfect day. However, that doesn’t always means that a 5 mile hike up rough terrain is right for you. Keep in mind too that depending on the time of year, some spots are harder to get to than others. Some locations will require a permit to shoot there, so make sure you don’t get caught doing something illegal! (Our team helps you with permits jut FYI).

Where do you see yourself saying your vows, and celebrating your first moments as a couple?

I love Joshua Tree in February and March! Yosemite around Winter time always takes my breath away. And of course Hawaii is just about perfect for an elopement any time of year.
